Autonomous Key tackles the problem differently by being a physical token. It’s an NFC key that pairs with a companion app, letting you lock distracting apps. Instead of tapping a button to unblock, you must scan the key with your phone to regain access. Each unlock can last up to an hour before the apps lock again.
That tangible requirement makes the idea compelling. By leaving the NFC key in another room, or even at the office or gym, you turn a fleeting urge to open Instagram or TikTok into a deliberate action that demands extra effort.
Priced at just $9, Autonomous Key is far cheaper than rivals like Blok ($29), Unpluq ($26.50), and Brick ($59).
Brick offers a few extra features—Sleep Mode and in‑app‑purchase blocking—but Autonomous Key delivers the core functionality at a fraction of the cost.
The key is compact, about 3 inches long, and works with Android 8.0+ and iOS 15+ devices.
The companion app supplies AI‑powered insights, tracking how often you unlock distracting apps, how long they stay open, and the times of day you’re most likely to reach for them.
Notably, the AI summarizes your habits with a deliberately sassy tone. For instance, if you repeatedly unlock apps immediately after locking them, it might remark that the key wasn’t far enough away and suggest placing it somewhere less convenient.
Unlike many app blockers, there are no subscriptions or premium tiers needed to unlock extra features. One key can pair with multiple phones, making it a practical choice for people with multiple devices or for families.
During my testing, I noticed the NFC scan sometimes required several attempts to register. So it may not be ideal for locking essential apps like messaging or email that you need to access throughout the day.
There’s also the issue of losing the key. If your apps are locked, the current workaround is to uninstall and reinstall the companion app. If they’re already unlocked, you can simply remove the key from your account. The company says it’s developing a backup unlock method that will arrive in a future update.
Autonomous Key is currently in beta after a Kickstarter campaign and began shipping earlier this month. It’s available in five colors: pink, orange, blue, gray, and brown.
